With a gentle ‘whirr’, ceiling fans waft a comforting breeze, carrying with it an enticing hint of the delicacies to come, while leafy parlour palms nod gently in quiet agreement. Cool marble and the sparkle of running water sit surprisingly well with the warmth of glowing candles and polished brass.
Inspired by the mid-19th century Indian Summer Houses of Delhi, stepping through our doors is a chance to step back in time. Plump jewel-toned cushions and intricately decorated wallcoverings would not appear out of place in a maharaja’s palace, yet our distinctly relaxed atmosphere encourages an immediate sense of belonging.
Our menu, and much of today’s Indian food as we know it, can be traced back to this era, however, several dishes we have selected that have their origins in Old Delhi, have in fact been influenced by many cultures, time periods and cooking styles, from the extravagant banquets of the Mughal emperors to Persia, China and beyond. Every dish and flavour has been created and recreated over centuries to satisfy the particular requirements of their audience, and so we are encouraged and honoured to stamp ours with the unmistakable Delhi Darbar twist.
A living contradiction of bustling bistro and oasis of calm, we are different by design, and our intention is to bring people together to enjoy good food, unfaltering service and convivial conversation whatever the time of day. So, whether you join us for a quiet morning coffee, business lunch or celebratory dinner, whether we are welcoming you or parting ways – Namaste.
