Our Culture

At Namaste by Delhi Darbar, we are incredibly lucky to have realised our dream, but we are happy to admit that we may not have achieved any of this without borrowing from our rich cultural heritage, learning lessons from those who have gone before us and gratefully receiving the love and support of others.

For those less fortunate, that dream may still seem like a world away and so we believe now is the time to give back.

When visiting our restaurant we invite you to look up to discover 350 golden rattan baskets, each one unique and skilfully woven by hand by a small group of widowed women from central Delhi. These baskets are distributed to markets throughout the local area, giving this small community enterprise a sense of pride, a feeling of hope and a means of helping them to help themselves. Because every basket is sold at a fair price, this allows them to feed and educate their children, to improve their living conditions and to reinvest in their future.

The Taj Mahal in Agra was the ultimate labour of love created by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in honour of his late, favourite wife Mumtaz. An incredible 20,000 artisans worked tirelessly for 10 years realising this magnificent white marble mausoleum, estimated in today’s terms to have cost almost £700 million.

Now a UNESCO world heritage site, and with close to 8 million visitors every year, tourists from around the globe flock to what has been declared one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

As with all things, time takes its toll, and so aging pieces of marble are constantly replaced ensuring that this architectural masterpiece never loses its alluring glow.

They say that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and so we are honoured to have recovered a piece of this historic marble to showcase in our restaurant, contributing to the ongoing restoration of the Taj Mahal and bringing a symbol of our love to the very heart of Glasgow.

Frank Water works within some of the most deprived areas of India and Nepal, providing adults and children with safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation – things we all take for granted. Since 2005, this social enterprise has been able to assist 400,000 people in 549 communities. As these communities are involved throughout this life-changing process, they are then able to take ownership of the products and systems they have helped to develop.

In life, we are surrounded by choices. We have found that the most rewarding is the choice to support others, and in what better way than giving those less fortunate access to what we see as a basic human right.

100% of the profits from the bottled spring water we serve goes to the people who need it the most, and we’re delighted to raise a glass to that!
